What can be saved and what usually can't

Hard, non-porous items — glass, ceramics, metal, sealed plastics, most kitchenware — are almost always recoverable regardless of water category, because they can be genuinely cleaned and disinfected. Solid wood furniture often survives clean-water exposure if it's dried slowly and evenly; the failure mode is rushing it, which causes checking and joint separation.

Upholstered furniture and mattresses are judgment calls in clean water and automatic losses in contaminated water. The padding cannot be reliably decontaminated, and the item spends the rest of its life smelling like the event. Particleboard and MDF furniture is generally a loss at any category — once the fibers swell, they don't come back.

Paper and photographs are the exception to every rule because timing dominates. Wet documents that go into a freezer within a day or two can be freeze-dried later with excellent results. The same documents left to air-dry bond into a block. If you have irreplaceable paper items, tell us on the first call — we'll prioritize them ahead of everything else.
